The Ford Mustang IV replaced the third generation in 1994, which was produced for a very long time – a full 15 years. The fourth-generation lineup underwent significant changes, primarily in terms of design. This generation was destined to be produced until 2004 and also underwent a restyling in 1998.

When choosing a platform for the new model, the designers decided on the rear-wheel-drive “Fox-4” base. The design was that of Patrick Schiavone and was very different from its predecessors. Its style was completely different. There were only some similar elements to the first generation.

The lines of the new Mustang were much more sloping, with the front end now featuring a very modest grille, almost a third of which was occupied by the model emblem, elongated headlights, and a prominent forward bumper with a long and narrow air intake at the bottom. The bonnet and front fenders were traditionally long.

The rear fenders had air intakes positioned near the doors, and the roof, like the other coupes, was heavily sloped back aft. A decorative strip ran across the top of the sidewall, through the wings and doors, and further underneath was additional understanding. Branded alloy wheels completed the picture.

Remarkably, 1998 was a turning point in history, because it was the year when the history of “Sport” modification, distinguished by branded triple-footer and black vinyl glued to the bonnet, ended. At this stage, the bloated shapes of the Ford Mustang faded into oblivion.

1999-2004

After the restyling, the Mustang’s overall silhouette remained the same, but the styling was more pronounced and aggressive. This design was called the “New Edge”. The car became more impetuous and clear, the chopped lines looked very organically, the bonnet got a big air intake, and the optics generally kept the shape, but its outlines became sharper. The doors were partially redesigned, and the boot lid had a dramatic spoiler. The model’s flair was augmented by noticeably larger wheel arches. Nevertheless, the platform remained the same.

In addition, the Cobra version was fitted with a modified bonnet and front bumper, distinguishing it from the GT version. There was also a special version of the Bullitt, named after the film which was released in 1968. It was produced in a limited edition.

The 1999 and 2004 editions should not be discounted either, as they were the anniversary edition for the model. However, such series have been limited. For example, 4,628 copies were made in 1999. These trucks were distinguished from the others by special emblems on the front fenders – “35th Anniversary”, as well as “40th Anniversary”. These cars were sold in GT modification, with certain changes in the exterior.

Engines Of Ford Mustang IV

1994-1998

The base version of the Ford Mustang was initially produced with a 3.8-liter, 6-cylinder gasoline engine with an output of 145 hp. But two years later (in 1996) it was increased to 150 hp. The racing version GT was sold with a 5-liter V8, which developed up to 228 hp.

FORD MUSTANG GT FOURTH GENERATION

Already in 1996 work began on upgrading the existing engines. At the same time, the 5-liter power unit left the scene, and in its place was the 4.6-liter, 215bhp “Modular” SOHC petrol engine, with eight cylinders and 16 valves. However, this motor was first fitted to Lincoln and it was only from there that the unit was taken over by Ford.

Two years later, the 4.6-liter output was increased by 10 bhp to 225 bhp. This was achieved by using a slightly revised fuel system, different control unit settings, larger diameter pipes, and a louder exhaust pipe.

1999-2004

The base 3.8-liter power unit remains the same but was extensively revised. The result was a new manifold (intake and exhaust) and redesigned cylinder heads. This helped to boost output to 190bhp, but it was only possible to get peak power in the upper range – at 5,250rpm. A further 3bhp was added in 2001 when the new variable geometry manifolds were introduced. However, the power peak was also increased by 250 rpm – it was now reached at 5,500 rpm.

The GT variant developed 260 bhp at 5,250 rpm and 409 Nm of torque at a torque of 4,000 rpm. Such performance was made possible by the introduction of a new intake manifold, shafts, and cylinder heads made by “Power Improved” technology.

The Mustang’s 4.6-litre 16-valve engine has also been boosted. Other innovations include an upgraded fuel line with a constant pressure function, complete with a pressure sensor linked to the PCM.

The racing version of the Cobra now has a new 4.6-liter engine with 32 valves. In 2003 all Cobra models received the same 4.6-liter engine but with a supercharger Eaton. This immediately affected the output of the engines – it increased to 390 hp, while the thrust was 530 Nm. Unsurprisingly, these Cobras could go ¼ mile in just 13 seconds.

FORD MUSTANG IV GT BACKSIDE

In 2003, the production of another popular model Mach 1, which fans of the brand remembered even from the first generation of Ford Mustang, was resumed. This version was equipped with a 4.6-liter engine with 2 pairs of camshafts, 32-valves, 8 cylinders in V-type, and with increased compression. To provide the necessary intake of air, the bonnet was fitted with a centrally mounted air intake. This allowed the engine to reach an output of 305 hp.

Ford Mustang Four Generation Interior and equipment

FORD MUSTANG IV INTERIOR

The IV’s interior remained as functional as ever, with excellent visibility, comfortable seats, and well-thought-out ergonomics. Certainly, there were some disadvantages. The quality of finishing plastics traditionally left much to be desired.

Nevertheless, equipment of expensive anniversary versions was very generous – here Ford did not skimp on five-speed manual gearbox, installation of fully independent rear suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, anti-lock braking system, leather upholstery of seats with carbon fiber inlays, and also the highlight of the cabin – “Mach 460” – 230-watt music amplifier, equipped with a regular CD-deck.
